With the
holidays just around the corner, many of us will be decorating our homes and
work spaces with adornments. But don’t neglect your outdoor space. They
can really help add to the festive atmosphere you’ve created inside. Here are some tips to help get you started.
Theme Let’s start
with a theme. Your theme can be broad – something like seasonal, or
holiday. Or, you can hone in on a specific design,
color scheme and pattern. A good place to start is with fall and transitioning to winter. Think about neutrals with pops of colors (warm tones for fall, metallics for winter) and mixed textures,
and even items that can be easily swapped out or will work for multiple themes.
Mixing in real and faux items, such as leaves, pine cones, pumpkins, and wreaths
can work for the next few months.
Multi-Purpose The next step
to think about is picking pieces that will have more than one use. For example,
lanterns and string lights can serve as decorative pieces and sources of light.
They can add charm and character as well as brighten up a space. Think of items
– it can be furniture, accessories, or anything you want to add to your space –
that can serve more than one purpose. Maybe pillows or a throw blanket on an
outdoor seating setup that can add color and texture while also being cozy and
comfortable. Having pieces like these can help save money and space, while also
allowing you to get creative with your decorating.
Weather-Proof
Furniture Since we will
be displaying lights, furniture, and other decorative pieces outside, we want
to make sure to protect them from the weather. Rain, snow, wind, and exposure
to sunlight can take a toll on your outdoor décor. Most items you purchase
will say on the label that it is suitable for outdoor use, or that materials
are weather or water-proof. If you’re unsure about a certain item, or don’t
want it to get ruined or damaged, I would suggest leaving it inside. Otherwise,
don’t be afraid to decorate the outside of your home and have fun with your design.
