DTLA: Architecture

There is so much to see and do in Downtown, LA that it’s hard to narrow it down to just three. We’ll definitely revisit DTLA in future blogs, but for now, let’s take a look at three buildings that really stand out in this town.

Bradbury Building is an architectural landmark in the middle of Downtown, LA, and opened over a hundred years ago. It is the city’s oldest standing commercial building. The upper floors are used for private office spaces, but the lobby is open to the public for viewing. Don’t be fooled by its inconspicuous exterior. Inside, you will find amazing craftsmanship, intricate ironwork, and a skylight that lets in a plethora of natural light. Rich with history and architecture, there is no shortage of detail to admire at the Bradbury Building.

Union Station  The LA Union Station is the city's main railway station and largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western US. In addition to being a transportation hub, they host a multitude of events open to the public, including farmers markets, film screenings, salsa nights, and much more. The building itself is something to behold in its own right. Between the grand chandeliers, warm tones and painted ceilings, your time spent here will prove to inspiring. Right outside, you'll find luxury apartment complexes, bridging the gap of work/play/travel.

Skyspace LA Located atop the iconic US Bank building, 1,000 feet high up in the sky, is the largest open-air observation deck with 360-degree views of the city. It's glass-enclosed terrace provides more than just views; how about a glass slide that takes you down three stories on the outside (yes, outside) of the US Bank building? A bar and lounge area gives you a chance to stop and take it all in. And before you are led outside, you're given a crash course on all things "LA" with some entertaining videos. It's definitely a unique way to take in the views of the city.

Malibu

Malibu is known for its pristine coastline and exclusive neighborhoods. Big, beautiful homes and private beaches aside, it plays host to many events throughout the year, including farmers markets, county fairs and several other community friendly activities. Below are some of my favorite Malibu hangouts.

Malibu Pier Now considered a point of historical interest, the Malibu Pier was at one time used as a storing and shipping location, fishing center, a Coast Guard lookout station, and now a public gathering place for tourists and locals, as well as event space for private and public affairs. You can enjoy coastal California cuisine at the Malibu CafĂ© (located at the end of the pier), go fishing, or enjoy the local vendors selling produce or artisan crafts. Right off the PCH, the Malibu Pier is just as beautiful from afar as it is up close, with unobstructed views of the Pacific.

Beaches The city of Malibu is home to Malibu, Zuma and El Matador State Beaches. Surf, sand and sun should be the city’s motto. Besides the obvious beach activities, Malibu is so picturesque, it provides for amazing backdrops for photo shoots (or photo ops) and private events. Nearby hotels offer equal parts luxury and unreal views. Nearby homes are also dreamy and grand. Whether you are just visiting for the day, or looking for a home by the beach, Malibu is the place to be.

Malibu Country Mart Mere minutes from the beach, you’ll find upscale dining, high-end shopping, boutique art galleries, sculptures and gardens, and so much more all within several blocks. The Malibu Country Mart is Malibu’s premiere outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment destination. Retail stores and restaurants are surrounded by lush gardens and cool art pieces, providing for a unique and eclectic aesthetic. It’s a great place to spend the day and sample what Malibu has to offer.

Books, books, books!

As an avid book lover, I’m always on the hunt for the next best read and the  next best place to find those reads. There’s something so nostalgic about bookstores and libraries. Below, I’ve included some of my favorite places for reading, browsing and buying books.

Barnes & Noble The last of the brick-and-mortar chain bookstores, Barnes & Noble is more than a place where books are sold. Here, you can experience everything books are supposed to represent: a space for imagination and creativity to flow freely. In addition to its online presence (online retail store, mobile app, and Nook e-books), the store hosts a plethora of events, including celebrity book signings, story time sessions and other activities for children, summer game nights, and much more. Barnes & Noble also sells music, movies, toys, games and electronics, school and art supplies, devices, as well as books and e-books. It’s a great place to spend a couple hours reading and stocking up on old and new favorites.

LA Public Library I chose the Los Angeles Public Library because I think it is one of the more accessible libraries (location-wise) to LA residents. However, I believe all local public libraries are wonderful and possess their own unique charms. The LA Public Library is located in a grand building and is overflowing with pieces of literature. The building is intricately designed with impeccable detail in its sculptures and painted ceilings. It is as much a place to learn and read as it is a place to admire art and architecture. Different departments are housed over several floors and there is no shortage of books to find. It is also centrally located in Downtown, LA, so you can venture out and explore the city.

The Last Bookstore My final pick is a book shop (also in Downtown, LA) that is whimsical and fun. The Last Bookstore sells books and music but also features art and uses actual books in the construction of their designs and displays. Here you will find endless mazes of books over two stories. You can browse for books, take in the fantastical displays, and find a photo-op at almost every corner. As inconspicuous as the exterior is, don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s just an average bookstore. It’s not. It’s where you can find books as well as feel inspired by all of the unique and artistic elements all around you.

LA's most sought after zip code is a playground for the rich and famous, and for all who love fashion, style and luxury. It is the place to see and be seen. Here are some of my favorite places in Beverly Hills.

Rodeo Drive One of the most well-known few square miles in the world, Rodeo Drive is home to world class shopping and dining. Celebrity chef-run restaurants, high-end designer fashion, fancy coffeehouses, and luxury retail stores can all be found within walking distance of each other. It is the quintessential BH experience. You can spend an entire afternoon window shopping, sipping on bubbly or a cappuccino, star gazing, brunching, people watching, or you can shop ‘til you drop! Rodeo caters to celebrities, locals and tourists alike.

The Beverly Hills Hotel & The Beverly Wilshire Hotel The hotels and resorts in Beverly Hills are second to none. You can’t go wrong with any choice you make, but two of my favorites are the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Beverly Wilshire. BHH is the iconic pink hotel, surrounded by tall, green palm trees. Known for its signature palm leaf print, Polo Lounge and pool scene, it is definitely worth a visit. The Bev Wilshire is the hotel where ‘Pretty Woman’ was filmed. Located in the heart of Rodeo, it provides easy access to shopping and dining. The hotel itself is luxurious and grand with great food and amazing amenities.

Sunset Boulevard Lined with beautiful palm trees, Sunset blvd. will take you from Downtown to Hollywood, through Beverly Hills all the way to Santa Monica. Along the way, admire the skyscrapers, beautiful architecture, stunning homes and estates, hip bars and ultra-chic restaurants, and of course, beaches and the Pacific Ocean. Besides the obvious photo-ops at almost every turn, it’s a great way to get to know LA and its many unique and eclectic neighborhoods. To really get into the spirit of LA, rent a convertible and ride off into the sunset!
